The most effective activism starts with a simple request — and is backed by proof of popular demand. Your first step should be to request an improvement to your street.
New York City’s Department of Transportation offers a number of street improvements that increase safety, improve walking and cycling conditions, and allow you to reclaim public space in your neighborhood. Below, we've made it easy for you to request street improvements directly from the NYC Department of Transportation.
After you’ve filled out the application, consider launching a petition to support your request. Street improvement requests that are supported by a group of neighbors are more likely to be expedited.

Bike Corrals replace car parking with multiple high-quality bicycle parking racks. If many people ride bikes in your neighborhood, this is a good improvement to request.

City Bench is a program that installs benches on city sidewalks. Benches can provide a respite for older New Yorkers, a place for kids to take a break, and create a destination on an otherwise desolate block. If your neighborhood lacks public spaces, this is a good improvement to request.

Neighborhood Slow Zones are designated residential areas with reduced speed limits and the addition of infrastructural traffic calming measures. If there are schools in your neighborhood, or speeding is a problem on local streets, this is a good improvement to request.

This simple change has been shown to dramatically reduce speeding and crashes for all road users while encouraging cyclists to ride in the street instead of on the sidewalk. Simple steps to increase pedestrians’ visibility to drivers at intersections, and the amount of time allotted for pedestrians to cross a street, can save an older New Yorkers life. If many of your neighbors are older New Yorkers, this is a good improvement to request.

Speed Safety Cameras are an automated enforcement tools that sends a low-cost ticket and warning to drivers who exceed the speed limit. Street Seats is a program that replaces car parking with public seating. Streets are public space, and benches are an important way to make that public space accessible.
